Powderhouse

Powderhouse (Circle or Square) is the next jewel on the our major business boulevard of Broadway.

Next to the little green urban oasis of Nathan Tufts Park and across the way from the Tufts Campus, Powderhouse is a convenient neighborhood business corner with personal care, business, and professional services as well as a few retail and dining destinations.

Around 1703, an important windmill was built here.  The grist mill served as an essential  industrial resource for the region's colonial farming economy and was a central crossroads for commercial activity.  In the mid-18th Century, the main structure served as the famous Old Powder House and was the scene of a British Raid on the King's and the Colonists' gunpowder.  With the main tower still standing, the Powderhouse is both the oldest business structure in greater Boston and one of the very few and most genuine reminders of the American Revolution.  The Powderhouse is the central feature of the Chamber's logo and the namesake of the Chamber's annual awards for excellence.

Located at the intersection of Broadway, College Avenue, and Powderhouse Boulevard, the area was once directly served by commuter rail and is now just a few blocks from the proposed new Green Line extension.  © 2006-2008
